There you were on Dec. 31, ringing in the new year at a party with a few cocktails, when you decide to confide in a friend, proclaiming that this is going to be the year you lose 20 pounds, avoid fast food and find that perfect job. It's a bold move, laying bare your hopes and desires for 2011. In all likelihood, however, you were hungover the next day, ordering takeout as you planted yourself on the couch.
Psychologists now believe that just as feeling embarrassed can cause a physical reaction (blushing) so self-destructive thoughts can lead to ill-health, weight-gain, poor skin and misery.
"The damage is not from the big hits. It's the multiple little hits," Amen said. "The offensive linemen had the worst brains because they're getting hit every play. Second-worst were the linebackers, then the defensive linemen and then the running backs. The best place to be is quarterback or defensive back because, even though quarterbacks do sometimes get the big hits, they don't get the repetitive little hits."

50,400 and Counting...
This month, the Amen Clinics reached an incredible milestone, surpassing 50,000 brain scans. Back in 1991, when Dr. Amen ordered his first SPECT brain scan, he had no idea it would become the cornerstone of his practice. Quickly, however, he realized that seeing patients' brains allowed him to better diagnose and treat them so they could overcome a variety of problems, such as attention deficit disorder (ADD), depression, anxiety, anger, brain trauma, and addictions. Because of his utilization of SPECT imaging, Dr. Daniel Amen has also been able to enhance creativity, energy, focus, and overall effectiveness for our patients.
For many years now, the Amen Clinics have had the world's largest database of SPECT brain scans related to human behavior, and Dr. Amen is looking forward to helping thousands more people change their brains to change their lives.
